Basic Safety Training

Elementary First Aid

Elementary First Aid provides basic care to individuals who are injured or suddenly become ill onboard ships. It helps keep the person safe until professional medical help arrives. This course trains participants to handle medical emergencies at sea and is an essential part of the Basic Safety Training (BST) course, under IMO STCW Regulation VI/1, Section A-VI/1-3. The BST course must be completed by all seafarers before they join their first ship. The course is designed and delivered in accordance with IMO Model Course 1.13.

Fire Prevention and Fire-Fighting

Basic fire-fighting training for seafarers is mandated by the STCW Convention (Table A-VI/1-2) and is an integral part of the STCW Basic Training. This training is also referenced in IMO Model Course 1.20, ensuring that seafarers are equipped with the knowledge and skills to implement appropriate safety measures and effectively operate fire-fighting appliances onboard ships.

Personal Survival Techniques

Personal Survival Techniques (PST) is a course designed to equip seafarers with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment. Conducted in accordance with IMO Model Course 1.19 and STCW Regulation VI/1 (Section A-VI/1-1), the training covers donning lifejackets and immersion suits, safe entry into water, actions during rescue, use of liferafts, survival equipment, and signaling devices. Participants learn how to stay calm in emergency situations and maximise their chances of survival until rescued. This course fulfils the mandatory requirements for seafarer familiarisation and basic safety training, prior joining the first ship.

Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities

Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR) course provides new seafarers with the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to safely work and live in the unique and often challenging environment aboard a ship. The course is part of the mandatory Basic Safety Training, required to meet the competence requirements outlined in Section A-VI/1-4 of the STCW Code, and covers safety practices, emergency preparedness and human dynamics, while working on board merchant ships. The course is designed as per IMO Model course 1.21.
